Babies love to be close to their family. I have had two different types of booster seats, and they were a wonderful tool to bring the baby closer to the family. The first baby booster seat was the type that attached to the table. My baby was absolutely enthralled with being so close to plates, cups, and food. She was close enough to grab anything that passed too close to her outstretched hands. Babies are messy, so I had to place a mat under the booster seat to protect the chair from spills, and one on the floor to catch food that did not make it in to her mouth, her hair, or somewhere on the table. I sat next to her and kept a wash cloth handy; always a good idea. I feel that the safety straps are important for holding my child in place. My child could not tip out of the chair, stand up and fall, or get down and run with food falling off and getting it on other furniture.
The second baby booster seat was for my next older daughter. It had a buckle that encircled the back of the chair, to hold it in place. We pushed the dining chair, with the attached booster seat close to the table, so she would feel connected to what was going on with the family. Meal time was an experience to remember; bonding over food, talking about our day, playing eating games with a spoon, trying to get the baby to eat something new. I used a baby booster seat at my friend’s house on the floor. It held my daughter securely, and kept her upright so she could interact with the kids. These seats are a handy piece of furniture to have around. There is no reason for me to set the child aside or out of the way in a play yard. We could play together, on the floor, with other children, knowing she was safe. Of course, I had to be there to keep a lookout. Playing was a happy time, a bonding time, just like having our meals together. This particular booster seat had a detachable tray. I would attach it, so she could play with several toys on the tray. I would play peek-a-boo with a stuffed dog toy along the tray edge.
I enjoyed having my child close to the table which provided bonding moments that I will cherish my entire life. When I look back, I will smile, and think about those times she tried to feed herself, the times I washed her face, and kissed her cheek; the bonding moments.
